Genre: Young Adult/Science Fiction/Thriller

Synopsis:

Samantha Taylor is not your average teenager. From the moment she could speak, her first words were filled with questions about the way things worked around her. Sam grows to be quite an intelligent young lady with a father who fosters her love of science. While her eccentricities might make it difficult to make friends at her school, she does have one friend, Charlie. A teenage boy who dreams of one day becoming a paleontologist.

Sam has been working with her father, Drew Taylor, to analyze DNA so they can use their genetic code to synthesize changes in their natural DNA. Her goal is to create plants that can naturally repel insects, so biochemicals are no longer needed. She spends much of her time looking at DNA strands under an older mass spectrometry meter that her father had purchased at an auction several years ago. Her father is a biology teacher at Northdale High School, where Sam is a freshman.

While this is a project they are working on together, Sam has other inventions that she has been working on in her laboratory, a room that her father gave her to do her own experimentation. Her skills with computer coding rival her abilities in genetics. Sam is working on developing a virtual reality application that allows her to manipulate DNA in a completely generic environment. It uses a database of all the genetic codes known to man. Her ideas are inspired by Doctor Alexander Williams, a famous geneticist who was working on DNA sequencing and alteration before he disappeared from the spotlight. One piece of information is missing from her equation, which keeps her up at night and invades her dreams.

Sam never thinks of creating something primordial until heartache enters her world. Her best friend is injured in a horrific car crash caused by a drunk driver. He loses his parents and is unable to come out of his coma. When she loses her temper at school, her father decides it is time for her to do her schooling at home. With the newfound freedom, she is able to focus on her experiments. Over the next few weeks, Sam becomes obsessed with bringing Charlie out of the fog. She hatches a plan to bring a living, breathing dinosaur back from extinction. With the drive to bring Charlie back, that is the moment she figures out the code to her program.

With her code in place, Sam can now use her program to make changes to the DNA chain to support the genetic reconstruction of old proteins. She extracts the proteins from the rocks and finds that some kind of dinosaur remains inside. Sam studies it for a brief period and uses the gathered DNA to create a strain that could support the formation of a new life form. Before she thinks of the consequences, she genetically alters a chicken egg to take on the attributes of the primordial DNA, hoping that if she succeeds, she will give Charlie something to live for.

At first, Sam has no idea if her experiment has worked, but after a few weeks, she notices there is life inside the egg. From the shadow inside, she can tell that the animal looks nothing like a normal chicken. She continues to study it during its incubation. Sam is surprised to find she has created an actual living, breathing triceratops, whom she affectionately names Willow. In her excitement, she sends an email to Dr. Williams. Something happens that she never expects. Her father calls her and tells her to lock the doors, to not let anyone into the house.

Sam discovers her whole life has been built on a lie. Her father is Dr. Alexander Williams, who had gone into hiding when the organization he worked for wanted to use his experiments to create biochemical weapons. He had taken the name Drew Taylor to keep them from finding him. GeoDyme was interested in making money and sold its information to the highest bidder. Their reach was endless. Whenever she sent the email, it caused a red flag in their system. They would be there at any time.

Before she knows it, Sam is catapulted into mass chaos as helicopters fly over their house. They quickly pack necessities and take Willow to safety. Sam has no idea where they are traveling and is terrified because armed men chase them at every turn. She starts to see her father in a different light as he takes down one man after the other. He is like some kind of super-soldier when it comes to protecting his own.

Nothing could prepare her for what happens next. All these years, she had been told her mother had died in childbirth. Instead, Natalie Gillman is alive and well. Daughter to the billionaire James Gillman, owner of GeoDyme, Natalie had made the ultimate sacrifice to protect her husband and child. James Gillman wanted to control and manipulate his daughter. He would never let her live a normal life as long as he could use knowledge to his own benefit. Natalie had not wanted that for her child and knew the only way to protect her was to pretend that she had been stillborn. Her parents had faked Alexander’s death, and he raised her on his own.

Before they can take down GeoDyme, they must rescue Charlie from the rehabilitation center. Anyone who could be used as a bargaining chip was in danger from the clutches of James Gilman, whose power seemed to run deep underground. When they get there, Sam learns that Charlie’s uncle has been keeping him drugged all this time and that the state of fog he was in was not his actual mental state. This had been done because his uncle had been spying on her visits with Charlie the entire time. He had learned all about her experiments and was part of the reason why GeoDyme was onto their location. When they bring Charlie to safety, they can enter their plan’s next stage.

Sam is asked to redesign the computer virus she had created years before, one that will bring GeoDyme to its knees. She makes it so that her grandfather, James Gilman, will never have power again. As they take off for GeoDyme, Sam leaves Willow with Charlie and the helpful neighbor, Mrs. Jenkins, who has a colored past herself.

Sam travels with her father and newly found mother to the Tyler Foundation, a shell corporation or GeoDyme that allows the true intent of the company to stay hidden. Nathalie then brings Sam and her father inside the building to take them down from the inside. Knowing that they have stolen her work, Sam has created a virus to erase her code from their system. While there, they will make GeoDyme public, sharing who they are and what they are doing, exposing corruption in their government, all while draining the bank accounts in the process.

Her father proves to be some suburban commando, a secret operative with quite the hidden past. He takes down several men while Sam hacks into the mainframe. But when her grandfather takes her mother hostage, the two of them pretend to give up, even though Drew Taylor has already called in help. While her grandfather is making a grand display of his power over them, Sam’s mother wrestles the gun away from him. She is caught between shooting him and letting him in when the SWAT team arrives.

When their police van pulls away, Sam has no idea they are actually taking them to an airport. As they are released, they make their way to the private island, where they will live in seclusion to protect Willow from the outside world. By the time Sam gets there, she has come to terms with her real feelings for Charlie, and a teenage romance starts to form. They will all live in hiding on the island, which is a sanctuary for all the animals who had been experimented on at GeoDyme.

Samantha Taylor is not your average teenager. From the moment she could speak, her first words were filled with questions of the way things worked around her. With a father who fostered her love of science, mirroring his own, Sam is fascinated with genetics and computer programming, two things that have been known to get her into trouble from time to time. While her eccentricities might make it difficult to make friends at her school, she does have one friend, Charlie, a teenage boy who dreams of one day becoming a paleontologist due to his obsession with all things primordial. Especially after the two of them discover the fossil of a triceratops in the back of his uncle’s property.

Sam’s world seems complete, until one life-altering accident bumps it off its axis, sending her into a tailspin she cannot control. When her best friend Charlie is in a coma, Sam feels the only way to bring him back is to create the one thing he dreamed of seeing his entire life, a living breathing dinosaur. She spends every waking hour, creating a virtual reality program that will help her manipulate the genetic code trapped within the rocks that contain the primordial DNA. The DNA of the triceratops they found has been preserved far beneath the earth.

She knew she could crack the code, but the consequences were never figured into the equation….
